Carving an airstrip out of a heavily wooded hillside in faraway Papua New Guinea (PNG) is your summer ministry if you choose this team! Your project is to continue clearing and leveling the land for a new airstrip for the village of Pori in the New Hela Province.
After completing your training at the Lord’s Boot Camp, you bus to the Orlando International Airport where you board a flight to Los Angeles, California. From Los Angeles a flight will take you across the Pacific Ocean, International Date Line and the Equator before arriving in Brisbane, on Australia’s Sunshine Coast. From Brisbane, you take a connecting flight across the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea to Port Moresby, the capital of PNG. After overnighting at a mission house, you will fly to Tari and then truck three hours to Pori.
You will then have a 40-minute hike to the airstrip, where you will set up your tents. Bathing and laundry will be done using buckets. The team will have plenty of opportunities to share through music, puppets and drama with the villagers who will always be watching you while you work.
Bartering with them for handcrafted bows and arrows, spears, sago hammers and bark bags called “belims” will give you souvenirs of your summer.
