Raging volcanos, thermal springs and vast glaciers all offer a stunning picture of Iceland—“the land of fire and ice”. After Boot Camp you travel by bus to the Sanford International Airport for a seven-hour flight over the Atlantic Ocean and Greenland to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. As you travel by bus through the lush countryside, you will pass lava fields, rugged cliffs, jagged mountains, volcanoes and rushing rivers. Your destination is a Christian conference and retreat center at Kirkulaekjarkot just beyond the town ofHvolsvollur. Your mission will be to help prepare the center’s grounds for a family camp that brings in over 1,500 visitors in August. You will plant trees and landscape as well as paint and clean “the ark,” an expansive multi-purpose building that serves as the camp’s center of activity and worship. As you work, beautiful landscapes will fill every view. You can see Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, and the Westman Islands, home to the elusive puffins, rolling hills and waterfalls, located just off the coast near the project site. All of this beauty can be enjoyed in almost 24 hours of daylight! You will be housed indoors and showers are available. Laundry will be done using buckets in the crystal clear, glacier-fed stream that runs through the property. Share the love of Jesus through music, puppets and testimonies. During your travels in Iceland, you may swim in the world-renowned Blue Lagoon, walk on a glacier, see a geyser or visitPingvellir National Park, where you can walk across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the junction of theAmerican and Eurasian tectonic plates. You may want to preserve your memories of Iceland by shopping for a special souvenir such as a hand-knit wool hat from a local factory, a hand-carved puffin or Viking memorabilia. You will return to Florida for Debrief. (Note: Florida Beach Debrief) |
